Rooted in stewardship and purpose, this eco-friendly nonprofit retreat blends wild beauty with simple comforts, offering a place to heal, reconnect, and remember your place in the natural world. Every stay supports environmental and health‑focused causes, turning rest into restoration for both you and the land.
Welch Cabin is built on a purpose-driven mission to preserve, promote and protect, opening its doors to the public as a place of healing, connection, and education. Welch Cabin serves as a model for sustainable living and land stewardship, from showcasing resource efficient bio-toilets and gray water systems to protecting wild steelhead habitat.

Local Adventures
Fly Fishing
Our guests fly fish for steelhead and salmon and rainbow trout on a private water access. Strictly managed water means this is all catch and release, barbless fishing. Fishing is yearlong and holds challenging and beginner water. A sandbar below the cabin, within sight of the deck, is perfect to teach beginners the art of casting.
The Volcano
Mount St. Helens
We are honored to be a favorite ‘residence’ for visitors of the Mount St. Helens Institute. Hiking and exploring the volcano is a rare opportunity, and we will assist you with your volcano plans. Check all the options available with the institute and read their most recent newsletter. You can also view the live webcam here.
Hiking - Ecotouring - Geocaching
Welch Cabin is nestled on 19 private acres, surrounded by miles of mountainous Weyerhaeuser forest. Private roads and trails wind through the forest, leading to creeks and rivers. Enjoy easy hikes and frequent wildlife sightings, including Roosevelt elk herds, blacktail deer, bald eagles, herons, and more!

Welcome To Welch Cabin
Welch Cabin is merely 44 minutes from PDX (37 miles), and sits proudly atop the Kalama River in the midst of 19 private acres of forests and wildlife. God's garden, nearly unspoiled and absolutely quiet and private.

Double Decks
Two decks, one for dining and sunning, and another for a private outdoor shower and biffy with a world class view. A sturdy hammock sits on the deck atop the gin-clear river below. You can look down 90 feet into the pools and rapids or up into the treetops that soar 60 feet overhead. We idly count migrating steelhead from the deck rail.
Modern Kitchen
Basic kitchen has utensils, a new gas stove and an oven. A freezer/fridge provides storage for your perishables and ice for your drinks. Spring water is worth bottling to take home. Inside sit down dining for five, with additional dining on the deck aside the fire and river.

DAN
Your Host Tim
My wife Leanella and I are 80-something grandparents. I retired from book and software publishing and Lee is a recovering Pacific Northwest rancher! We love to share our 5-star Welch Cabin with those seeking natural beauty, spiritual connection and some simple peace and quiet. We operate as a 501c3 business that protects, preserves and promotes our beautiful part of the world.
Your Host Dan
Dan is married to my biz partner Sharon. He's been a critical player at Welch Cabin some 25 years, and earns 5-star ratings from our visitors! Most of the time Dan greets our guests on arrival and provides a quick-start intro to the quirks and anamolies of life almost 'off the grid'. Dan and I have fished and hunted together for some 30 years. Give him a bear hug!
